Implants are a popular tooth replacement option because they give wearers a very natural look and feel. Often our patients ask us if dental implants will feel like their natural teeth. Here, our Fort St. John dentist explains more about dental implants.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw bone to act as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. Implants are made from titanium because it is biocompatible, meaning that the screw can fuse with the bone and become a solid foundation for the restoration that will go on top. The restoration portion of the implant can be a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on the number of teeth being replaced.
Do dental implants feel natural?
Unlike natural teeth, dental implants are not alive so the implant doesn’t have any nerves in it to feel sensations. Any feeling you experience related to the dental implant will actually be coming from the gum tissue surrounding the implant. Apart from that, dental implants look and function almost exactly like natural teeth.
You even care for implants just like you care for your natural teeth, and they're even designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding teeth. Once your implant has healed, and you’ve had a few weeks to get used to it, you’ll hardly notice the difference at all!
